New Work, New Collection, New Direction

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the direction of my work.  I’m very fortunate in that I have different streams to my business; I work with an agent who promotes and sells my bedding and wallpaper designs, I work directly with clients to create designs for their products, I work on large-scale architectural commissions often for public buildings and more recently I’ve started selling actual products with my designs on.  You’d maybe think that that was enough?! Well I thought it was until the other week when I wanted to update my website (that’s another blog post coming soon!), particularly the Portfolio section, with some new work.  I started going through all my designs and realised that there weren’t many I could share with you or that I was able to upload to my new shop because they were either designs created for client’s products, or designs created for my agent to sell.  As much as I enjoy these areas of my work and they’re very important to me, there’s still a part of me that wants (and needs!) to be able to share what I do, publicly.  Not just to be able to gain more work and projects but also just for the sake of sharing and putting it out there.  There’s something about sharing creative work that feels very rewarding and a big part of why I do what I do.  So that’s when I had my ‘light bulb’ moment, which will probably seem obvious to many of you, I need to create a collection (or few!) of my own that I can share on here and in my shop.  So that’s what I’m going to be working on over the next few weeks, in between my other work of course!

In fact I started this week with a new design just for me.  It actually felt quite indulgent to be designing just for the sake of designing and fulfilling my creativity.  A different way of working to what I’m used to – designing to a client or agent’s brief.

I shared the design development process over on Facebook and loved connecting with people and getting the feedback.  It really felt like they were a part of the whole design process, so thank you very much if you were one of them! I began by uploading an image of the design as I was developing it, before any colour was added.   I thought it would be fun to ask people what kind of colour palette they envisaged for it, a warm spicy one or a cool indigo palette.  I had some really lovely comments from some really lovely people and the palette that came out as favourite was the warm spicy one, so I then posted this image of the chosen colour palette:

Again, the feedback was great and everyone seemed to like the palette so I went ahead and coloured the design and shared a peek of it, which you can see here:

Once the design was finished I realised that it actually sat really well alongside some other designs that I had previously released on products in my shop.  I just needed to re-colour them so they all sat together as a co-ordinating collection.  So here it is, my first (and hopefully of many) collection of designs just for me, oh and for all of you of course!

Thanks so much to everyone who participated over on Facebook this week, it was great to have you involved and I hope you all like the finished collection.  I just need to come up with a name now!
